About “I Met God In Mexico”

On a trip sailing from Los Angeles to Miami my wife and I sailed into Z-Town (Zihuatanejo - Mexico) and met up with some friends that offered to cook up the catch of fish we brought in with us. Of course it ended up as a little party. I had never been much of a drinking man but after a little persuasion, and before dinner, I was convinced to take a shot of Mescal. That lead to the need to shoot down a beer to cool off the shot.  Before I actually ate the worm at the bottom of the bottle, rumor has it that I downed 10 shots of the stuff and chased each with its own beer. Though I don’t remember much more about that night (or the next 2 days for that matter) I did seem to manage writing this song. I didn’t actually remember writing it until after we reached Miami and found it scribbled out in a notebook with my usual melody line and chord accompaniment. When I found it and played it, I only partly remembered that night. The scattered images of that night made me laugh enough that I thought I might add it to my repertoire of songs. What’s not in the lyrics is anything about a lime throwing and flatulence contest or Richard who gave another guy a hickey - against his will of course (afterwards telling him ‘Have fun explaining that one to your wire!) ….. It was the first and last time I ever did tequila shots, as my wife officially has banded me from the substance- She remembered the night well, apparently. The up side is that I didn’t get a single mosquito bite for the next two weeks!
