RUM AND COCONUT
RUM AND COCONUT

Last month I set a coarse for the isle of Bimini
And just like that my boat was slammed by wind and sloppy seas
Just at the time I’d had enough and I turned my boat around
That mother wind had changed her mind and she ran my boat aground
Some would say my luck was bad with all the things gone wrong
But I just smile and play guitar and sing dem all this song
Chorus
Don’t cry for me you folks up in the states
With all your bills and your traffic thrills.
I’ll watch the stars ‘till late
And tomorrow will be a sunny day
I’ll lie down in the sand
And drink a rum and coconut and get myself a tan
Yost Van Dyke had such a little pleasant drinking shack
I drank too much. My skiff got loose
And now I can’t swim back
The mosquitoes started drinking my 151 proof blood
I didn’t seem to notice sleeping face down in the mud
A lot of folk send pity hope some day I’ll come along
But I just smile and play guitar and sing dem all this song
Chorus
Don’t cry for me you folks up in the states
With all your bills and your traffic thrills.
I’ll watch the stars ‘till late
And tomorrow will be a sunny day
I’ll lie down in the sand
And drink a rum and coconut and get myself a tan
Betty on the boat next door was looking rather sweet
I called her on the radio to tell her where to meet
But Sheila heard the gossip as it traveled on the phone
She caught me in my hammock
Oh, and I was not alone
Chorus
Don’t cry for me you folks up in the states
With all your bills and your traffic thrills.
I’ll watch the stars ‘till late
And tomorrow will be a sunny day
I’ll lie down in the sand
And drink a rum and coconut and get myself a tan
With Betty, or with Sheila and we’ll roll around in the sand
And act a little decadent and get ourselves a tan
And drink a rum and coconut and get ourselves a tan

About “Rum and Coconut”
When you just have a bunch of memories of good times and yet family and friends living to keep up with the Jones’ tell you that they worry about you, you tend to feel like I do. You want to tell them to get a life. Rum and Coconut is about just that, a reminder to those living only between their commute home and bedtime with one week a year to pretend to be rich while on vacation. It’s a song that reminds me that life lived to its fullest has no time for collecting and hording things that do nothing back for you.
This is a bit of a silly song but really, life is meant to be savored. Those people going to church on Sunday then spending the rest of the week forgetting about their families for the pursuit of monetary gain should stop to remember that the Lords Prayer says “Give us this day our daily bread” and not give me today what will make me feel secure for years to come. Somehow living day to day in our society is a bad thing. I don’t know how people got that backwards but living for today is the only way to live. If you do what you love and do it well you will have enough without thinking about it. If you spend your life trying to pack it away and worrying about life to come, you life will go to ruin.
